Description
Turleigh Mill is a former mill with origins dating back to the 16th century, though it underwent significant alterations in the 19th century and was converted into a house in the 20th century. The building is constructed of rubble stone and ashlar, topped with a slate roof featuring coped gables and a south-facing stack. It stands three storeys high, with the upper floor previously having four large louvred openings at the front and rear, supported by ashlar piers. The front openings have been fitted with 20th-century glazing.
On the first floor at the front, there are three 4-light hollow-moulded Tudor mullion windows with hoodmoulds; the central window is original, while the others are from the 20th century. The ground floor features 20th-century three-light mullion windows on either side of an arched door. To the left, there is a large iron waterwheel. The north end wall includes a pointed moulded doorway with an ovolo-step-ovolo moulding, likely from the 17th century, at ground level, with a 20th-century window above that retains its original moulded lintel. There is also an attic moulded depressed-arched doorway, possibly from the 17th century. Behind the mill, a mill pond rises to the first floor level of the front. The mill was historically connected to Turleigh House in the 18th and 19th centuries and was used as a tan-yard for over 100 years, as noted in sale particulars from 1857.
