II

House, C17 refronted early C18, rubble stone, originally roughcast, with ashlar dressings, stone slate roof, coped gables and end stacks. Two storeys, five-window range originally of 2-light mullion windows in architraves with moulded sills and leaded lights, and centre 6-panel door in similar architrave. Ground floor windows have 12-pane sashes replacing mullioned lights. Small ashlar coved cornice and ashlar parapet with plain centre pediment and roundel. Parapet is ramped up each end. North end lean-to. Rear wing, gabled each end, with sashes on south side. A rainwater head dated 1847. Attached front wall with spearhead iron railings and gates. Interior: Panelled room with fluted pilasters to left of entry, later C18, but ovolo-moulded doorcases downstairs and upstairs in front range, C17. Rear range has heavy chamfered beams with stepped run-out stops. House is said to be dated 1700, but no known datestone. (N. Pevsner Wiltshire 1975 540)
