Description
Uplands is a house that dates from the 17th century but was refronted in the early 18th century. It is constructed from rubble stone, originally roughcast, with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof, coped gables, and end stacks. The building has two storeys and a five-window range, which originally included 2-light mullion windows set in architraves with moulded sills and leaded lights. The central entrance has a 6-panel door in a similar architrave. The ground floor windows have been replaced with 12-pane sashes.
The house has a small ashlar coved cornice and an ashlar parapet that features a plain centre pediment and roundel, with the parapet ramped up at each end. There is a lean-to at the north end and a rear wing that is gabled at both ends, with sashes on the south side. A rainwater head dated 1847 is also present. The front wall is attached and features spearhead iron railings and gates.
Inside, there is a panelled room with fluted pilasters to the left of the entry, which is a later 18th-century addition. The doorcases, both downstairs and upstairs in the front range, are ovolo-moulded and date from the 17th century. The rear range has heavy chamfered beams with stepped run-out stops. Although the house is said to be dated 1700, there is no known datestone.
