Description

The Lyns is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, which was refronted in the 18th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features stone slate roofs, with an east end stack and a ridge stack on the main range, as well as a west chimney gable on the cross wing at the west end. The building has two storeys and an attic.

The main range presents a regular three-window front, featuring 18th-century cyma-moulded flush mullion windows, with three lights on each side and a two-light window in the centre above a plank door set in a raised moulded surround, topped with a hood on brackets. The ground floor windows are adorned with hoodmoulds. The lower cross wing has a gable that projects to the north and includes ovolo-moulded 17th-century mullion windows, also with hoodmoulds; there is one three-light window on both the ground and first floors, and a two-light window in the attic. The roof of the main range is hipped down to the ridge of the cross wing.

Inside, the layout suggests it may have originally been an open hall house, featuring a three-room and cross-passage plan. Notable interior elements include fine Tudor-arched fireplaces in the hall and on each floor of the cross wing. The hall has a high inserted four-panel compartmental ceiling with deep hollow-moulded beams, and the trusses above show some smoke blackening. The floor levels at the south end do not align with the 18th-century front, and there are heavy chamfered and stopped beams. The north end room contains very heavy floor joists. This farmhouse is likely associated with the Druce family, who have been recorded in Turleigh since the 16th century.
