Description
Turleigh House is a house dating from the early 19th century, built on an earlier core and altered around 1900. It is constructed of rubble stone with ashlar dressings and some cement render, with stone slate roofs. The main front range has a mansard roof with ridge and end stacks, likely representing two distinct builds. The right side of the front elevation has a three-window design, featuring 12-pane sashes on the upper floor and a smaller casement pair above a door set within a pilastered ashlar doorcase with a pediment; this doorcase may be from around 1900. To the left of this is a large, two-storey canted bay with a cornice and balustraded parapet, housing large 12-pane sashes. The cornice molding on the bay differs slightly but is continued over a single-window range to the left, which is rendered and incorporates a sash window above and a French window below. An attached, large, 1900s ashlar-fronted two-storey range is present at the east end, featuring a balustrade, a central pediment, and broad timber mullion windows on each floor. A long, significantly altered range is attached to the west end, possibly originally a drying shed, with ashlar piers now infilled. This range includes sash windows, and the left end is faced with rough boarding. The long rear elevation is of rubble stone construction. The house was associated with the Turleigh tannery from the mid-18th century; sale particulars from 1857 indicate tanning had been occurring for over 100 years by that time. In the 19th century, it was known as Brooklands, and around 1900, it was purchased and altered by Major Levieson Scarth, after which it was renamed Turleigh Mill.
