Description

Mill House is an early 19th-century house that was formerly a mill and mill house, featuring a re-set datestone from 1674. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with the former mill house painted. The mill house has a slated roof, while the mill, which has been reduced in height, has a flat roof. There is a rendered chimneystack on the right-hand gable of the house and a larger rendered stack on the ridge, which is off-centre to the left.

The house has a double-depth plan with a central passage leading to a dog-leg staircase at the rear. It is two stories tall, while the remnant of the mill and the addition to the right are single-storied. The house features a symmetrical three-window front, with all windows being six-paned sashes. The central doorway is round-arched with a plain fanlight above. The heavily moulded six-panel door includes a notable cast-iron knocker shaped like a clenched fist holding a bar, from which a wreath hangs. There is a cement band between the storeys.

To the left, the former mill has been converted into a 20th-century wing of the house, with the datestone 1674 TS re-set on a window embrasure inside. At the rear, to the left, the brick-lined end of the leat remains, complete with an iron sluice-gate. The mill wheel is believed to have been removed shortly after 1900. The interior of the house has been significantly altered, but a wooden staircase with thin, square-section balusters still exists. Approximately 15 meters to the east, alongside the Liverton Brook, there is a former barn that has been converted into a garage, which is separately listed.
