Description

Byfield Cottage and Castell Foundry Cottages are a pair of cottages, likely originally built as a single house, dating from the 17th century or earlier. They feature solid roughcast walls, probably made of stone or cob, and have an asbestos slated roof. A large rendered chimneystack is located on the right-hand gable, while an even larger stack, which has rounded corners and rises from a broad base about 2 meters high, projects from the front wall of No. 4; this stack has a 20th-century brick shaft added on top.

The cottages have a single-depth plan and are two storeys tall. The long frontage includes only two small second-storey windows, one in each cottage. No. 3 has an off-centre doorway to the right of the window on the ground storey, while No. 4 has a doorway to the right of the stack and a window to the left. The windows and door of No. 3 are from the 20th century, except for the second-storey window, which features a single-light 19th-century wood casement with three panes. In No. 4, the ground storey windows have 19th-century wood casements with two lights below and one light above, all with three panes per light; the door is a four-panelled early or mid-19th-century design, with the two lower panels flush.

The interior of No. 3 has not been inspected, but the owner reports a good fireplace in the right-hand wall. The ground storey room of No. 4 has no exposed features, and the upper storey has not been inspected. There may be interesting features hidden beneath the plaster.
