Description

A pair of cottages, likely originating as a single house, probably dating from the 17th century or earlier, with later additions to the rear and right side. They are constructed of roughcast cob and stone. The roof is covered with tarred slates at number 1 and concrete tiles at number 2, with a hipped end and a catslide to an adjacent lean-to. The rear wall of number 1 features large rendered chimneystacks, while number 2 has a stack with a tapered top surmounted by an added brick shaft on its front wall. The cottages have a single-depth plan. Number 1 has a single window on the upper storey, located to the left, and two windows in the ground storey, with a doorway within the lean-to to the right. Number 2 has a single window to the left and a doorway to the right. All windows at number 1 have 20th-century metal or plastic casements. The door at number 1 is a 4-panelled door from the 19th century. Number 2 has a 19th-century wood casement window of two lights, each with six panes, and a 20th-century glazed door. The interior of number 1 was not inspected, but it is likely to contain features of interest, particularly the fireplace in the rear wall. The ground storey of number 2 contains a large fireplace in the front wall, likely dating from the 17th century, with lightly chamfered monolithic granite jambs and a plain wood lintel.
