Description
Rock Cottage is a house dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof, coped gables, and a stack at the west end. The house has a basement and two storeys, originally with a two-window front. The upper floor has two 12-pane sashes, while the ground floor features a plate glass sash and a front door with a hood supported by brackets. A raised plinth, band, and eaves band are also present. The east end wall features apex dove-holes and sashes on the ground, first, and basement floors, along with a basement door. A central axial stack rises from the rear roof slope.
A lower range extends to the west, incorporating Bridgwater tiles and squared rubble stone walling. This west range has 12-pane sashes on both floors and a door to the right side. A further range beyond the west range is set into the hillside, incorporating a 16-pane window and a door at a higher level due to the slope.
The house was owned by the Heal family during the 19th century. A stone quarry located behind the property was documented in an 1841 Tithe map survey. It is believed that the cottage was used as a bakery in the later 19th century.
