Description

The Old House is a former mill and tannery that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with a wing added in the late 18th century to early 19th century and further alterations made later. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a stone slate roof, which has a hip on the left side and a half-hip on the right side of the late 17th century to early 18th century wing. There are various stacks, including a stone and brick ridge stack on the right wing, a rendered stack on the gablet on the right side, and a brick stack on the gablet at the rear of the late 18th century to early 19th century wing.

The structure forms an L-plan, with the late 17th century to early 18th century section on the right facing Gloucester Street and the later wing set back to the left, also fronting Gloucester Street. The main range is two stories high with three windows and an attic. The first floor has three 6/6-pane sash windows with plain reveals and stone cills, along with one 8/8-pane sash window in the attic to the right. The ground floor features two similar 6/6-pane sashes and a late 18th century to early 19th century six-panel door that has reeded and shaped panels, with the upper four panels glazed and a 19th century moulded stone hood above. The left wing has a shallow plinth and quoins at the left and right angles. The right side includes a late 17th century to early 18th century ovolo-moulded timber mullion window that has undergone later alterations. The interior has not been inspected.
