Description
Two houses, at 169 and 173 Gloucester Street, date from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. They were originally three houses, and have a through-passage plan with three gables facing the street. The houses are constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble, with a concrete tile roof. They feature two brick ridge stacks, one stone and one rebuilt in concrete blockwork, on the ends of gabled rear wings. The front elevation has a three-window range and two storeys plus an attic. The first floor has three 20th-century three-light timber casement windows with exposed timber lintels. Two similar windows are located in the gables above the right-hand house (number 173), and a two-light leaded casement is in the gable of the left-hand house (number 169). Four 20th-century two- and three-light casement windows with exposed timber lintels are on the ground floor; the window furthest to the right (number 173) is in a blocked former doorway. Access to both houses is via an open passage on the left, featuring an exposed timber lintel. A shallow plinth is present. The interiors have not been inspected. The buildings have group value.
