Description
A pair of late 17th and early 18th century cottages on Gloucester Street, Cirencester. They are constructed from coursed limestone rubble, with traces of old limewash on the left-hand side (number 175). The roof is covered in Welsh slate, with a brick right-end stack likely shared with number 185 Gloucester Street, a large stone stack on number 177, and a concrete blockwork stack on the rear gable of number 175.
The cottages are two storeys and have an attic, with a two-window front. The first floor has two three-light leaded windows, with the centre light of the left-hand window being leaded. They have exposed timber lintels. The ground floor has a three-light window to the left, also with an exposed timber lintel and a C20 bay window with a stone-slated hood extending over the door on the right-hand side (number 177). There are two gabled dormers, each with a C20 two-light casement window. A plank door, likely from the 18th century, on the left provides access to a through passage; the entrance to number 175 is off this passage to the left. Number 177 has a C20 plank door on the front elevation. A stone plinth and quoins to the first floor right angle are visible.
The interior of number 175 was inspected, revealing a C20 staircase and alterations, including a rear extension. The first floor front has a roughly chamfered beam with run-out stops, while the ground floor front has a chamfered beam with step stops.
