Description
Upper Provender Mill is a corn mill located on London Road (A4) in Calne Without, dating from the early to mid 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed rubble stone with ashlar dressings and features a Bridgwater tile roof. It has coped gables with saddlestones. The east side of the mill has three storeys, while the west side has four, with a four-window range. The east side includes Gothic single lights with stone transoms, most of which are blocked, and a basement-level door to the left. The west side has plain two-light mullion windows with transoms on the upper floor, also mostly blocked, along with a ground floor door and a first floor loading door to the left. The south end wall has its ground floor obscured, but features a plain two-light mullion window on each of the three floors above and a gable lunette with a centre mullion. The east end has been damaged by later additions that have since been removed. The roof is a six-bay structure supported by queen-post trusses, and while most machinery has been removed, some 19th-century storage bins remain.
Attached to the west of the mill is the former mill-house, which has been converted into offices. This building, also from the early 19th century, is made of rubble stone with brick dressings and has a stone slate roof, with ridge and west end stacks. It is designed in an L-plan and has two storeys. The original mill-house had three windows but was later extended to four, linking it with the mill building. The first floor features glazing-bar sashes with brick jambs, while the ground floor is obscured. The coped gables are consistent with the mill. The north side of the mill-house has a ground floor canted bay window with a lean-to roof that extends across the front, a 16-pane sash window above, and a roof dormer. A six-panel door is located to the right. Additionally, a rear wing made of painted stone extends north from the west end, dating from the mid-19th century, and forms a courtyard with the mill building. There is a later addition to the north.
