Description

Ashley Wood Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1861, built for Alfred Morrison of Fonthill House. It is constructed of dressed limestone and features a Welsh slate roof with coped verges and diagonally-set brick stacks. The building has a T-plan and is designed in a 17th-century style. It is two storeys high with three windows across the front. The ground floor includes three 3-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements with hoodmoulds, with the two left bays projecting slightly. There is a plat band at the first floor, which has three 2-light mullioned casements with hoodmoulds; all windows are made of cast-iron and have lattice designs. The left gabled bay has a blocked casement in the attic, while the centre bay features a lozenge date stone inscribed with "1861" and the initials "AM". To the right, there is an attached single-storey outhouse with a single casement. The left return of the farmhouse has a gabled porch with a 4-panelled door and 2-light mullioned casements. At the rear, there is a two-storey wing with a planked door and 2-light mullioned casements. Inside, the farmhouse contains 4-panelled doors set in moulded architraves and window shutters. This building is a good example of the architecture associated with the Fonthill Estate and remains unaltered externally.
