Description

Higher Berrycourt Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of dressed limestone and has a Welsh slate roof with brick stacks. The building is L-shaped and features a two-storey, four-window north front with sash windows. The entrance includes a six-panelled door with egg and dart moulded panels and reveals, accompanied by a transom light to the left of centre. There are large sixteen-pane sashes on either side of the door and a flush sixteen-pane sash to the right. The first floor has three reset early 18th-century twelve-pane sashes with thick glazing bars, along with one late 19th-century sash to the right. The roof has coped verges.

The right side of the building has 20th-century French windows and steel casements, while the left side features twelve-pane sashes on the 19th-century wing and a 20th-century extension. The rear includes an eight-pane sash, a three-light casement, and a 20th-century two-storey porch. To the left, there is a 19th-century single-storey outhouse with a hipped tiled roof, which is now part of the house.

Inside, there are several early 18th-century features, including fine six-panelled doors and exceptional raised and fielded panelling in the first-floor corridor. These interior elements are reputed to have been brought from Ashcombe House, which was partly demolished in the mid-18th century.
