Description
38, 40, and 42 Totnes Road are three houses built around 1850. They are rendered with a slate roof that is hipped at the ends and feature stacks with rendered shafts and platbands. The houses are situated on a triangular site next to Belgrave House and may have originally been part of the same development.
The buildings are two storeys high with a symmetrical front comprising three bays and five windows. They have deep eaves supported by paired moulded brackets, with pilaster strips on the left and right sides and an eaves band. At the first-floor sill level, there are platbands. No. 42 has a narrow central doorway with a recessed 20th-century front door and a plain overlight. Nos. 38 and 40 share similar paired front doors in the center.
The ground-floor windows consist of 2 over 2-pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars. Nos. 38 and 40 have outer first-floor windows that are 12-pane sashes, along with a pair of narrow 2 over 2-pane sashes in the center. No. 42 has replacement aluminium-frame first-floor windows that are not in keeping with the original design. The right side of No. 38 features one first-floor 12-pane sash window. The interior has not been inspected.
