Description
No. 53 Totnes Road is a detached villa, built between 1835 and 1845, currently used as a hostel. The building is rendered and features a hipped slate roof with left and right chimney stacks that have rendered shafts, platbands, and multiple old pots. It has a double-depth plan, is two rooms wide, and includes left and right projections that are likely 20th century additions. The villa has two storeys and a symmetrical three-bay front. The chimney shafts are linked to the roof by slate-hung gabled projections. The deep eaves are supported by shaped brackets, with pilaster strips on the left and right sides. There are single-storey lean-tos on both sides with S-shaped roofs and niches in the blind front walls. The central entrance features a recessed four-panel door with a plain overlight, flanked by 20th-century timber French windows. On the first floor, there are three 12-pane sash windows with margin panes. Inside, original features include joinery, a stick baluster staircase with a mahogany handrail, local marble chimneypieces, and some plaster cornices.
