Description

A row of three cottages, originally four, dating to the late 17th and early 18th centuries, with 20th-century alterations. The front of the buildings are rendered cob on stone footings, with thatched roofs to the front of the ridge and slate to the rear. Number 4 has a slate roof throughout and a hipped left end. Stacks have rendered and brick shafts, some with old chimneypots. Number 1 incorporates the former number 2. Numbers 1 and 3 have a single-depth 3-room plan, with rear additions, while number 4 has a single-depth main range. The asymmetrical front has five windows. The eaves of the thatched roof are eybrowed over the two left-hand windows. Number 1 has a 20th-century half-glazed door to the left of the centre, three enlarged 20th-century iron-framed ground floor windows, and three first-floor small windows with 20th-century timber casements. Number 3 has a recessed half-glazed door and one ground and one first-floor timber casement. Number 4 has a half-glazed front door and one ground and one first-floor 2-light small-pane timber casement. Pitched stone paving in front of the houses is included in the listing. The interior of number 1, the only one inspected, has been modernised with 20th-century carpentry. The right-hand room contains a small range in the fireplace to the rear lateral stack, and there is evidence of a former stair between the rooms. The roof is said to consist of A-frame trusses and was not inspected.
