Description

No. 6 Cambridge Place is a detached villa built around 1830. It features limestone ashlar construction and a slate roof. The building has a compact design with a low-pitched hipped roof and a side entry leading to a central transverse staircase.

The villa stands two storeys tall with a basement and has three windows on the front. The windows are sashes with margin lights, featuring a six-pane sash on the first floor and a twelve-pane sash below, all with raised surrounds and floating cornices on the ground floor. The windows are centrally grouped, and the facade is slightly recessed at each end for about one meter. The roof has box eaves supported by brackets, and there are ashlar stacks on either side. The left side of the building also has three windows, some of which are blind, and a large square porch with Roman Doric pilasters and an entablature, leading to a panelled door and a short flight of steps. A 20th-century railing surrounds the terrace at the front of the house.

Inside, the kitchen retains the original pine dresser that reaches from floor to ceiling, supported by turned posts for the shelves. There are stone steps leading down to the cellar, which contains three rooms, one of which has old stone wine racks and an inner room that shows evidence of a lockable gate for a spirits store. The garden door is reinforced with iron strips on the panels and has an iron security bar.

Historically, this villa is the highest of a group of five villas in the area, set above street level, and is very similar in style to Nos. 4 and 5 Cambridge Place.
