Description

Nos. 1 and 2 Cambridge Place are semi-detached villas built around 1820, with 20th-century additions, and are attributed to the architect John Pinch. They are constructed from limestone ashlar, and the roof is not visible. The design features a compact layout with a side entry leading to a central transverse staircase, and later rear wings that create a recessed center.

The exterior consists of two storeys and a lower ground floor, each with one window, but there are central trompe l'oeil blank lights. The windows include twelve-pane sashes with margin panes, slender iron balconettes on the first floor, and shallow sunk surrounds on the ground floor, along with floating cornices. The lower ground floor has a nine-pane sash window, which has been replaced at No. 2. The building has shallow end pilasters that are slightly set in from the corners and lack capitals or bases. The lintel features a frieze, cornice, blocking course, and parapet, with the parapet coping only returned. A central ashlar stack is present on the hipped roof.

The left return of the building has two twelve-pane sashes with balconettes above blind lights, and there is a square central projecting porch with pilasters, a panelled door, and a transom light. The rear features a hipped extension with nine, twelve, and twelve-pane sashes. No. 2 has a similar return and a 20th-century wing at the rear. The interiors have not been inspected. This pair of villas is the first in a series of five similar but varied villas in the area, all elevated above street level.
