Description
The water trough, dating from the early 19th century, is located in the wall of No. 7 Cambridge Place, although No. 7 itself is not included in the listing. It is constructed from limestone and sandstone ashlar. The exterior features a pair of narrow piers with sunk panels and cusped heads at two levels, topped with cross saddle cappings and trefoil pediments. The trough has a wide four-centred arch with a broad ovolo mould edge, under tympana with sunk centres, and a straight moulded parapet. The arch voussoirs extend to the rear wall, which is set back approximately 7 centimeters in plain ashlar above the water trough, formed from a large sandstone block. The top of the trough is covered with sandstone slabs and a broad horizontal bar, which once supported railings. The trough faces Widcombe Hill, which slopes steeply at this point, and it utilizes the numerous springs that emerge from the hillside. It is part of the boundary wall to No. 7 Cambridge Terrace, which is not included in the listing.
