Description

Boyd Farmhouse is a late 17th-century building, possibly incorporating earlier fabric, originally a corn mill. It has an "L" shape and was altered in the 19th century and later. The farmhouse is characterized by its picturesque gables, with rendered walls and pantile roofs. The front elevation features two small gables with copings and saddlestones on the right, and a larger gable with a rendered stack at its apex on the left. It has two storeys plus attics within the gables. The windows are a mix of 2-light stone mullioned casements in the attics and on the first floor, and later 3-light stone mullioned casements on the ground floor. The ground and first floor windows are long mullion type, originally transomed. A chamfered door opening is on the left, with a narrower door opening to the right of centre; a later closed porch with patterned panelling is located on the right. Square ashlar stacks have been restored along the ridge. A small oval window is set into the right-hand end gable. A rear wing extends from the main building, featuring a gabled two-storey two-bay section with a stone ball finial. A gabled stair turret, containing a modern staircase, is situated in the angle to the left of the main door. The rear of the house has two ranges of 2-light mullion windows, plus two modern windows, and a single-storey extension on the left. Inside, the kitchen and parlour feature chamfered beams. A large fireplace is centrally located, alongside a back door leading to a lobby entrance.
