Description

Durham's Farmhouse is a mid-17th century farmhouse with later additions and alterations. It is constructed from roughly coursed limestone and marlstone rubble, with a concrete tile roof featuring coped verges and gabled finials to the gable ends. The original plan consists of two units. The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic. It features chamfered mullion windows with dripstones, flanking a roughly central entrance. A three-light window is positioned on the first floor, and a two-light window on the ground floor to the left. The ground floor window to the right has been replaced by a small 19th-century casement window. Two 20th-century gabled dormers are visible in the roof slope. A 20th-century gabled porch, with a boarded outer door, conceals a plank door fitted with strap hinges. Integral end stacks are present; the left stack has a red brick base and a stone shaft, while the right stack is paired, rebated with moulded dripstones, and capped. The rear wall includes a four-light mullion window to the left, and a three-light mullion window on each floor to the right – all mullioned windows have dripstones. Inside, the ground-floor rooms have cross beams; those on the left are boxed, while those on the right have stepped ogee stops. A winder staircase rises from the first floor to the attic. The roof is a double-purlin cambered collar-truss roof, in three bays, with curved principal rafters. A single-storey 19th-century addition projecting to the right, and a two-storey brick addition attached to the left gable end, are not considered of notable architectural interest.
