Description

The Dower House is a house from the early 17th century with later additions and alterations, located in Chastleton. It is constructed from roughly coursed marlstone and limestone rubble, topped with stone slate roofs that have coped verges on the left gable end of the main range. The main range has two storeys and an attic, while the lower range to the right has one storey and an attic.

The main range features three bays with three-light mullion windows that have dripstones; the first-floor windows are ovolo-moulded, while the ground-floor windows are chamfered. There is a central 20th-century ledged door. Gabled dormers are situated in the middle of the roof slope on both sides, and there are integral ashlar end stacks, with the right stack having a moulded dripstone and capping, and the left stack being rebuilt above the dripstone in the late 20th century.

The range to the right has a chamfered four-centred doorway with a 20th-century glazed door to the right of centre, flanked by two three-light chamfered mullion windows. It also features two two-light leaded gabled eaves dormers, and integral ashlar end stacks on the right and a ridge stack to the left of centre, both with moulded dripstones and capping. There is apparently a 19th-century parallel gabled range at the rear of the main range, along with gabled ranges at right angles to the rear of the lower range. The interior could be of interest, but it was not possible to inspect it during the last survey in August 1987.
