Description
The garden wall, gate piers, and steps located to the north and east of Chastleton House are likely from the early 17th century, with some later repairs. The wall is made of regularly coursed and dressed marlstone, featuring ashlar and rounded rubble coping. It begins where it meets the garden wall to the south of Chastleton House and runs along the north side of the churchyard of St. Mary’s Church before turning at right angles to form the eastern boundary of the garden. This section includes two 18th-century gate piers that have moulded capping and ball finials. The wall then makes another right-angle turn to separate the upper and lower gardens. To the north-west of this section, there are two sets of straight-flight steps with square piers, also topped with moulded capping and ball finials. A section of the wall connects to the west side of the house and runs northwards along the road to join The Dower House. The part closest to The Dower House is buttressed and features a 4-centred chamfered arch where it connects to the house.
