Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Theatre Ope are a planned pair of houses located on a street corner in Devonport, Plymouth, dating from the mid to late 19th century. The houses are constructed of stucco and feature a slate or asbestos slate roof that is mostly concealed behind a parapet with a moulded entablature. There are two stuccoed axial stacks. The buildings have a double-depth plan and rise to three storeys, presenting an overall five-window range to Theatre Ope. The symmetrical three-window front of No. 2 is on the left, while the similar symmetrical front of No. 1 is on the right-hand return facing George Street.
The windows are late 19th-century four-pane horned sashes, with the ground floor displaying channelled rustication and segmental arches. The first floor has a sill string and moulded architraves with tall keys to moulded hoods, while the second floor features simpler architraves with rounded upper corners over bracketed sills. Each front has a central doorway topped with a broken segmental pediment on consoles and original panelled doors.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. These houses are included for their group value, as they are prominently situated near other listed buildings in Chapel Street and George Street.
