Description

Nos. 2, 4, and 6 George Street is a planned terrace of three houses located at the end of a tapered block of planned terraces, with two shops added later. The buildings date from the early to mid-19th century and are constructed of stucco with mansard roofs. No. 4 has a slate roof, while the others have been replaced with asbestos slate. The roofs feature 3:2:3 dormers behind a modillion parapet cornice, and there are stuccoed and brick end stacks on stuccoed copings. The layout is a double-depth plan.

The terrace stands three storeys high and has a 3:2:3-window arrangement. The original hornless sashes with glazing bars are present on the second floor of the end houses, while the other windows have been altered or replaced. The right-hand house retains its original architraves. Rusticated giant pilasters flank the upper floors of the central house, with plain end pilasters on the other houses. There is a mid or late 19th-century moulded entablature above the shopfronts on the centre and right; the right-hand shop has been altered in the 20th century, and the other shopfront is mostly boarded up. No. 6 has two boarded-up sashes on the ground floor.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to contain some interesting features. This terrace is part of a notable group of listed buildings.
