Description
The Shakespeare Public House is a public house built around 1870-1880, located on Theatre Ope in Devonport, Plymouth. It features a stucco exterior and a hipped roof covered with slate or asbestos slate, topped by a heavily-moulded parapet entablature. The building has a stuccoed lateral stack with a moulded cornice positioned near the center of the front.
The structure has a shallow double-depth plan with an entrance at a splayed corner. It stands three storeys tall and has a window arrangement of 2:1:4 on the first floor, which includes a left-hand return. The windows are late 19th-century, with 4-pane horned sashes. The ground floor displays channelled rustication and segmental arches, with a string course above. The first-floor windows are framed by moulded architraves featuring tall keys that rise to moulded hoods, while the second-floor architraves are simpler, with rounded upper corners and sill brackets.
The corner shopfront boasts a full-width moulded entablature above a series of bays divided by pilasters, with doorways that include overlights and panelled doors in the second bay from the left and the right-hand bays. The shop windows are transomed and feature margin lights over panelled stall risers.
The interior has not been inspected but may remain as unaltered as the exterior. The Shakespeare Public House is part of a notable group of buildings in the center of Devonport.
