Description

This is an early to mid-18th century town house with a later shop. It is located on the south side of Looe Street, in the Barbican area of Plymouth. The front of the building is painted brick, while the rear has slate hanging. The steep roofs are covered in dry slate, except for a lower rear roof which is tarred. The front roof is half-hipped and has deep moulded eaves with a modillion cornice at both the front and rear, while the rear roofs are hipped at their rear ends. The house consists of a single-depth range at the front and a deep wing extending at right angles to the rear left.

The front elevation is three stories high and features a regular four-window range. The windows are hornless sash windows, some with glazing bars, except for a later horned sash window in the rear wing. The front has a plinth, mid-floor bands, and segmental arches above the first and second-floor windows. The ground floor includes a simple mid-19th century shopfront on the left, and a wide segmental-arched doorway on the right. The shopfront has a pair of hornless sash windows and an overlight to a narrow doorway. The rear wing, facing right, has a two-bay, two-window range, plus two small lights inserted in the 20th century. The right-hand part of the rear wing has paired sash windows, including a pair of 18th-century sashes with thick glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. The building is part of a significant group of 17th and 18th century houses.
