Description
Corporation Buildings is a terrace of local authority housing with a corner shop, built around 1900. The buildings feature painted brick walls, concrete floors and staircases, and dry slate stepped roofs with slightly projecting eaves, hipped at the ends. They have deep brick end stacks with stepped cornices. The layout is double-depth with a mews street at the rear, and each house has a central ground-floor through passage, divided into one-bedroom tenements.
The exterior consists of three storeys, with each house displaying a symmetrical three-window front, except for the house with the corner shop on its right. The original windows are 12-pane horned sashes with segmental heads, and the central doorways also have similar heads, overlights, and panelled doors. A moulded entablature with consoles clasps the corner over the original pilastered double shopfront, which features transoms above the front windows and plate glass in the two large windows on the right-hand return. At the rear, each house has a four-window range with original 12-pane sashes flanking single lights. There are flat-roofed stores with planked doors linked to dwarf walls topped with steel balustrades. The interior has not been inspected. This terrace is part of a complete block of largely unaltered early local authority housing.
