Description

No. 36 Looe Street is a merchant's house dating from the early 17th century. It features a render on a timber frame and rubble construction, topped with a steep dry slate roof that has eaves projecting over the oriels. The building has a double-depth plan that includes 20th-century additions at the rear.

The exterior consists of three storeys. The second floor has a 17th-century oak canted oriel window with a moulded frame on both the left and right sides, and a wide horizontal-sliding sash window in the middle, all with glazing bars. The first floor features a much wider oriel window with six lights, moulded mullions, and small-paned casements, along with a moulded cornice and a hipped slate roof above. The three oriel windows are supported by shaped and carved brackets under the splays, with a central bracket beneath the first-floor window.

On the ground floor, there is a canted shop window with glazing bars and a hipped roof on the left side, while the right side has a panelled door with a moulded frame, which is a copy of the original 17th-century design now housed in the Museum. The interior has not been inspected. This house is a fine example of an early 17th-century merchant's residence, particularly distinguished by its fenestration that highlights the main living areas on the upper floors. It is part of a significant group of 17th and 18th-century houses.
