Description

A pair of late 18th-century town houses with later shops, situated on the north side of Southside Street in Plymouth's Barbican area. The houses are constructed of Plymouth limestone rubble with dressed stone voussoirs framing the ground and first-floor openings, likely originally stuccoed. They feature a dry slate mansard roof with deep projecting eaves supported by a moulded cornice, and two wide mansard dormers with late 19th-century paired sash windows. A rendered chimney stack sits on the right-hand side. The building follows a double-depth plan and extends over three storeys plus an attic, with a two-window range and rubble end pilasters. Late 19th-century paired sash windows are found on the upper floors; those on the first floor are set within openings designed for keyed segmental arches. The ground floor has a wide central doorway, now blocked on the right, a 20th-century shop window within an original wide opening on the left, and a 20th-century shopfront in a widened opening on the right. The interior has not been inspected.
