Description
This is a mid-19th century shop premises located on the north side of Southside Street, in the Barbican area of Plymouth. The building is of double-depth plan and is rendered in stucco, with the roof concealed behind a parapet featuring a moulded cornice that projects forward over pilasters of an attic storey.
The exterior has a symmetrical three-window front. The upper floors contain mostly original hornless sash windows. The ground floor features an original pair of double shopfronts flanking a central doorway. The attic storey has paired round-arched windows; the left window retains its original sash, while the others are later casements. The sill of the attic storey forms a heavy moulded cornice with paired modillions, returning to the left-hand corner. Rusticated quoins are present on the first and second floors. A moulded string course to the second floor projects forward to bracketed sills and windows with moulded architraves. The first floor has pilastered surrounds with pediments on consoles: a central triangular pediment flanks with segmental pediments. The ground floor has a fascia entablature featuring a moulded cornice and consoles to the shopfronts, which incorporate slightly-bowed two-light six-pane windows. The central doorways have splayed return lights, overlights and pilasters.
The interior was not inspected but is likely to be as unaltered as the exterior.
