Description
This is a large merchant's house, likely dating from the early 17th century on the Barbican area of Plymouth. The front is timber-framed and jettied, with a plastered facade above a ground floor of Plymouth limestone rubble and lighter-coloured limestone quoins. The building has a pair of steep slate roofs with gable ends facing the street, featuring moulded bargeboards and three original turned pendants to the valley and apices. Rubble axial and outbuilt lateral stacks are visible on the left-hand return, and a lateral stack is located against the party wall on the right.
The house is three storeys high, with the second floor partly within the roof space, and originally had a three-window front. Modern oak mullioned windows with leaded lights now fill the openings. The second-floor has a canted three-light oriel window with sidelights and moulded cornices, supported by shaped and carved brackets. A wider, six-light transomed oriel is centrally positioned on the first floor, flanked by flat three-light transomed windows, all with ovolo-moulded mullions and frames. The original ground-floor doorway features moulded detailing with a mitred head and an old wrought-iron gate. There are two windows to the left of the doorway and three to the right.
The interior was not inspected for the current listing, but a previous description notes a timber newel staircase with panelled sides and, on the first floor, a wide timber doorcase with moulded jambs and carved stops.
