Description
53 and 53A Southside Street is a wine merchant's house dating from the 17th century, originally built for Collier and Co., who occupied the premises until a few years ago. The front of the building was likely remodeled in the mid-18th century, with a lead rainwater head dated 1782. The front is plastered and features moulded cornices that create a pseudo jetty effect between the floors. It has a steep dry slate roof and rear lateral stacks, with a deep plan that includes rear wings.
The building is three storeys high and has a three-window range. The upper floors feature 18th-century paired hornless sash windows with thick glazing bars. The first floor has rusticated quoins. On the ground floor, there is a moulded fascia interrupted by an open pediment above a pilastered doorway located to the right of centre, which contains an 18th-century six-panel door. To the left of the doorway, there is stucco with channelled rustication flanking a plate glass window and a doorway with a two-panel door. At the far right, there is a wide window opening also fitted with plate glass.
The interior has not been inspected, but a former listing description notes a concealed 17th-century fireplace.
