Description

This is a merchant’s house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It is located on Southside Street, in the Barbican area of Plymouth. The front of the building is rendered brick, with applied mock timber framing. It has a slate roof with a low-pitched triangular pediment featuring a modillion cornice and acroteria; the pediment includes a coat of arms and ball finials constructed from reused materials. A brick stack is located on the right side, and a large rendered rubble and brick stack is in the centre. The building has a fairly deep plan and is four storeys high, with a three-window front. Original 12-pane hornless sash windows with thick glazing bars are present. A slightly bowed shopfront from the 20th century is set back on the ground floor. Although the interior has not been inspected, a previous listing description mentioned a large carved wooden fireplace dated 1680 and a small 18th-century staircase with turned balusters and column newels.
