Description
Grove Villa is a house dating from circa 1830, with extensions added circa the mid-19th century. It is constructed of stucco, with a hipped slate roof featuring lead rolls to the hips and ridge, and rendered side stacks topped with yellow clay pots. The plan includes two principal rooms facing the south garden, an entrance on the east side, and service rooms at the rear (north) within two-storey wings. A single-storey, one-bay extension was added to the left side circa the mid-19th century. Around the early 20th century, shops were incorporated at the rear (north).
The south front has two storeys and three bays. It features two tall, fifteen-pane sashes on the ground floor, with a shallow, three-centred arch niche in the centre. The upper floor has twelve-pane sashes, with a blind window centrally positioned. A ground-floor verandah has been removed. To the left is a single-storey extension featuring a French window, a cornice, and a parapet above. The east return features a central doorway with a fielded six-panel door, rectangular traceried overlight, and a moulded canopy supported by shaped brackets; a 20th-century extension is to the right, incorporating a twelve-pane sash above. At the rear, two lower hipped roof service wings are present, the right one featuring an early 20th-century shop front. A single-storey extension on the right also incorporates an early 20th-century shop front.
The interior retains much of the original joinery, including panelled doors, window shutters, a staircase with stick balusters, column newels, and a wreathed mahogany handrail. First-floor rooms feature moulded wooden chimneypieces, one retaining its original grate. The ceilings have moulded plaster cornices and light roses.
