Description

The Atlantic Hotel is a custom house and hotel located in St. Mary's, built in the late 18th century and 19th century, and remodeled in 1927 by Richardson and Gill for the Duchy of Cornwall estate. The building features coursed and squared granite with slate roofs, gabled to the rear wings and half-hipped to the main front corner block, which has granite end stacks. The right range has a gabled artificial slate roof.

The hotel has a double-depth plan with two parallel rear wings that project to the left (west). The main front corner block is two storeys high with attics and has a symmetrical three-window range. The central doorcase is adorned with Greek revival painted pilasters and brackets, featuring a Greek key pattern that supports a cornice. Above the late 19th-century horned 2/2-pane sash windows, there are granite lintels, and similar sashes are found in the hipped dormers with slate-hung cheeks.

To the right (east) is an early 19th-century two-storey extension, also symmetrical with a three-window range, featuring granite lintels over the central door and similar sashes. The two-storey wings at the rear have overhanging eaves, horned 6/6-pane sashes, and a segmental-arched opening with a 20th-century window, likely replacing a former barrel store, which incorporates the Custom House built in 1840. Inside, the hotel has been extensively remodeled in the 20th century but retains open fireplaces with granite lintels.
