Description
A terrace of eight houses, including a shop, was built around 1926 by Richardson and Gill for the Duchy of Cornwall. The building is constructed from coursed and dressed granite, with a flat concrete roof concealed behind a parapet. The design follows a double-depth plan, with each house originally containing a kitchen, parlour, and scullery. It is in a Neo-Georgian style. The terrace is two storeys high, with a 24-window frontage to Hugh Street and a 2-window return frontage to Mumfords facing Garrison Lane. Each house has granite lintels and cills to a tripartite sash window on the ground floor, featuring margin lights and horned 6/6-pane sashes. First-floor windows are also 6/6-pane sashes with margin lights. Keyed segmental arches top the 6-panelled front doors, each with a fanlight above. Mumfords, the shop, has a shop front on a canted angle, characterized by two Doric half-columns framing a half-glazed central door with sidelights, and flanking pilasters framing two 24-pane fixed shop windows. Above, and to the return, are 6/6-pane sashes in a canted corner. The terrace sits on a raised plinth with pilaster divisions between the houses, a plat band, cornice, parapet with coping, and recessed stacks. Flat roofs were deliberately chosen to withstand the strong winds typical of the Isles of Scilly. The terrace is considered a significant example of Richardson and Gill’s work for the Duchy of Cornwall estate on the islands. The interior has not been inspected.
