Description

The Bishop and Wolf Public House is a house, built around 1700, and subsequently used as a public house. It was originally constructed for Thomas Ekins, the first land agent for the Godolphin Estate, who had resided on the islands since 1683. The building is constructed from coursed granite rubble, with a front facing of dressed and coursed granite. It has a gabled roof covered in scantled slate, and granite end stacks. Originally designed with a central staircase plan, the interior was remodelled in the 20th century. It is two storeys high with attics, and has a 5-window range on the first floor. The ground floor features a full-length bay window with pilasters dividing the glazing-bar windows, and a doorway to the right, designed by Geoffrey Drewitt in 1952. The first floor has keyed lintels over horned 6/6-pane sash windows. There are two dormers with hipped roofs, with slate-hung cheeks and sash windows similar to those on the first floor. The ground floor interior was remodelled in the mid 20th century. This building is one of the earliest surviving houses on the islands and is of historical interest as the former residence of the first land agent.
