Description
This is a late 18th-century house, originally a custom house, now operating as a hotel. It was altered in the mid-19th century and the 20th century. The building is constructed of painted stucco with a slate roof, featuring two tall external brick stacks on each return. It has a double-depth plan with additions to the south side. The exterior presents three storeys and an attic, with a four-window front. A continuous dormer runs along the south side, likely added for a look-out related to its custom house function. The second floor has 3/6-pane sash windows, the first floor has 6/6-pane sashes with 20th-century sun blinds, and the ground floor has 20th-century windows. The right return has 6/6-pane sash windows to the upper floor and 2/2-pane sashes to the ground floor. The entrance is located within a single-storey block to the left. The interior has been altered. A high, rendered rubblestone wall, approximately 30 metres long, is attached to the south wing and slopes down to a height of approximately 2 metres. Historical records from 1902 show the building served as both the Custom House and Coastguard House.
