Description
Dolphin Cottage, Bank Cottage, and Step Cottage are a group of three houses dating from the 18th century or early 19th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries.
These buildings are constructed from granite rubble stone, featuring some large blocks, and have scantle slate roofs. Dolphin Cottage and Bank Cottage are painted white, while the east elevation of the south range of Step Cottage is rendered. The chimneystacks are made of granite rubble stone, with two of the gable-end stacks on Step Cottage being rendered.
The three cottages form a roughly T-shaped layout, with Step Cottage to the west, Bank Cottage to the north, and Dolphin Cottage to the east. Each cottage is believed to have a two-cell plan with a central staircase.
The exterior of the cottages is two storeys high. The north elevation of Dolphin Cottage has a two-window range with three-over-three sash windows; the ground floor window is horned, and the opening may have been altered. It features a 20th-century half-glazed door, and the left-hand end of the roof has a half hip, while the right-hand end has a large rubble stone stack. The rear elevation includes a single-storey lean-to. Bank Cottage's principal elevation is on the east side and consists of three bays, with a central entrance door flanked by windows on both the ground and first floors. The door and windows are late 20th-century uPVC replacements, and there is a rendered ridge stack towards the right-hand end, along with a tall stack at the rear. Step Cottage, located on higher ground, has an L-shaped plan with gable end stacks and a single-storey range at the rear. Its principal elevation is L-shaped, featuring one bay to the left and two bays to the right. Above the door and ground floor window are large granite stone lintels, and the windows are two-over-two horned sash windows.
Inside, the cottages are understood to have fireplaces with large stone lintels.
