Description

The memorial obelisk to Battiscombe, dated 1849, is located 2 metres south-west of the Church of St Mary in Bothenhampton. It features a square stone pedestal with incised corner pilasters in a Soanic style. The obelisk has a cornice with projecting corners and a pedimented roof adorned with acroteria at the corners, which display crossed palms. The tapering stone obelisk stands on a moulded base. The main inscription reads: "Sacred to the memory of William Battiscombe, who died September 26th 1849 in the 70th year of his age."
