Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church that was completely rebuilt in 1863, although it is dated 1809 on the east gable. It features rubble stone walls and slate roofs, with a nave and chancel, a north aisle, and a south porch. The church has stone gable-copings on both the west and east gables, with the west gable displaying moulded kneelers. A stone sanctus bell-cote with a pitched roof is situated at the west gable, and there is a stone cross at the east gable. The building is one storey high and has three windows in the nave and two in the chancel, featuring single lancets with deep-chamfered jambs. The nave includes a two-light window with Y-tracery and a chamfered label above, while the windows have lozenge-leaded and stained glass lights.

The south porch is made of dressed stone and has a slate roof, with stone gable-copings that include roll-kneelers and a trefoiled apex-block. The entrance is a pointed arch with straight-chamfered jambs and a chamfered label above, leading to a two-leaf plank door with strap hinges.

Inside, the church has a north arcade consisting of three bays supported by octagonal piers with moulded capitals. The chancel arch features two pairs of responds and moulded capitals. The roof is a collar-beam design with king-posts and transverse strutting. The font is made of Purbeck marble, with a basin decorated with fleurons, spread arrows, and blind-arch ornament, dating from the early 13th century, and it stands on a stone cylindrical stem with a scalloped base.
