BOTHENHAMPTON WALDITCH Berry Farmhouse

Detached Farmhouse, of longhouse form, with byre in use. Date c.Cl6 with early C17 ceiling, and C19 and C20 alterations. Cob and Rubble- stone walls. Corrugated-iron roofs. C20 brick stack at left hand gable, and on ridge. House is now converted to 1½ storeys. Byre at left hand is one storey. House: c.4 windows, with early C20 brick dressings and segmental brick arch-heads to ground floor windows. 2-light wooden casements with glazing-bars, C20. Two C20 dormers with 2-light wooden casements with glazing-bars. Door, at left hand, wood with 9 glass panes, bowed, C20. Byre at left hand: a continuous build with the farmhouse. Door, at right hand, plank stable-door with wooden framing and lintel. Loft door at centre plank. Loop, left of centre, further door to byre at left hand end. C19 room at left hand built into the former byre. Interior: Roof has 3 jointed-cruck trusses with 2 soffit pegs and a lower slip- tenon. Cambered collar with one peg mortice and tenon. Probably 3 purlins per principal. Ridge-piece cut off where interrupted by stack, whereas upper purlins continue across sides of stack. Central stack straight-jointed to rear west wall. Bread oven on west side. East jamb rebuilt in brick. Inserted ceiling with 3-inch chamfers with step-and-hollow stops. North gable end wall not at right-angles. RCHM Dorset I, p 3O(11).
