Description

The Old Farmhouse at Gwrlodde is a 16th-century longhouse with a derived plan, featuring one storey and an attic. It is constructed of rubble stone and has a corrugated iron roof. Originally, the farmhouse was built on crucks and may have had timber walls. The second and third bays were likely built of stone up to the first floor, with timber framing above. The house consists of three bays: an uphill parlour with a gable stack and a stone stair at the rear, a second room with a stack at the downhill end, and a later kitchen located in the byre beyond a cross passage. This last bay connects to a slate-roofed bay at right angles, which is attached to a later barn on the west side of the farmyard. The uphill end of the house may be an early 17th-century extension.

There is a boarded door to the upper bay, featuring a heavy chamfered frame and an inserted shaped doorhead. Although windows have been removed and are due to be replaced, there is a diamond mullioned attic window in the upper bay and a small window to the stair with a drip mould in the east gable. The second bay may have originally contained the cross passage, and there is a door along with a later inserted cart entrance.

The link block to the barn has a slightly lower ridge and different roof construction, including a doorway in the angle. The gable end has two blocked openings that are internally splayed, suggesting it predates the barn.

Inside, the stone wall between the upper and second bay features an embedded blackened cruck with a long saddle piece for a lower roof. The blade is notched for a purlin, though the foot is no longer visible. There is a doorway at the north end of the dividing wall that is also covered. The upper bay has ogee stopped chamfers on four cross beams, similar to those in the lower bays. The second bay contains a low fire lintel with a fireplace that has internal cupboards, and a flush doorway on the south wall leads to a projecting staircase. The roof trusses have tenoned collars and halved pegged apex joints, notched for the ridge, with the principals springing from projecting stub-bearing plates.
