Description
The obelisk in the churchyard of St John the Baptist is an early 19th-century commemorative monument made of stone, possibly Portland stone. It has the shape of an obelisk set on a square base, which features a stepped plinth and a base with flat corner pilasters on each face, flanking inscribed panels. The inscriptions are now badly worn, but one date, 1842, is still partially legible. The monument has a heavy cornice with an egg and dart design, topped with flat incised pediments and Soanian acroterions. The obelisk rises to about 3.5 meters overall. Located near the north boundary and opposite No 5 Church Terrace, this solitary monument stands in an otherwise level churchyard and visually contributes to both the church and the nearby houses of Church Terrace.
