Description

Nos 4, 5, and 6 East Chaldon are a terrace of three cottages located in Chaldon Herring. Nos 4 and 5 were originally one house, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, while No. 6 was added, likely in the 18th century. The cottages feature brick walls set on a stone base, with raised cob, thatched roofs, and brick stacks. The north elevation, which faces the road, has three casement windows with glazing bars on the ground floor. The attics include three half-dormers with horizontally sliding sashes that also have glazing bars. There is a lower extension at the east end, constructed with stone walls and a tiled roof. The entrances are located in the rear, south wall, featuring ledged doors; the door to No. 5 is in a timber porch with a corrugated iron roof. No. 5 also has a lean-to extension with stone walls and a slate roof. Inside, the main ground floor room of No. 5 contains a large open fireplace, which is partly built up and includes a bread oven, along with a deeply chamfered ceiling beam. No. 6 has stone walls and a thatched roof, with a 6-panel door in the north wall. The ground floor has one horizontally sliding sash window with glazing bars, and the attic features two half-dormers with casements that have glazing bars. There is also a lean-to extension at the rear of No. 6, made of stone walls and a slate roof.
