Description
Lilac Cottage, The Homestead, and Rose Cottage form a terrace of three cottages located on the west side of the Village Green in Chaldon Herring. They are probably from the 18th century.
Lilac Cottage, situated at the southern end, features stone walls with brick dressings and a thatched roof with brick stacks. It is two storeys high and has a two-storey wing at the rear, which is also built of stone and thatched, originally functioning as a separate cottage. The main block has a ledged door with a glass panel, while the ground floor includes a modern metal casement window. The first floor has two horizontally sliding sash windows with glazing bars. There is a single-storey extension on the south side with stone walls, brick details, and an asbestos slate roof, which has two windows, one of which features glazing bars.
The Homestead, located in the center of the terrace, also has stone walls with brick dressings and a thatched roof with a brick stack. It is two storeys tall, with a ground floor that includes a ledged door with a glass panel and one horizontally sliding sash window with glazing bars. The first floor has two similar sash windows.
Rose Cottage, at the northern end, appears to be a slightly later build. It has stone walls with brick dressings, a thatched roof, and a brick stack. This cottage is also two storeys high, featuring a ground floor with a modern panelled door and two modern casement windows with glazing bars. The first floor has two similar windows. At the time of the survey, Rose Cottage was under repair.
