Description

A terrace of three cottages, likely dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, and possibly representing the remodelling and extension of an earlier house. The construction is rendered stone rubble, with hipped slate roofs covered in red clay ridge tiles; Lilac Cottage has been reclad with asbestos slates and Meadow View’s roof has been coated in bitumen. Large rendered stacks with slate weathering and tapered tops are present, with a lateral stack on the rear of Lilac Cottage and an axial stack between Rose Mount and Meadow View.

The cottages are arranged in a row of single-depth plan; Rose Mount and Lilac Cottage each have a two-room plan, while Meadow View has a single-room plan. Lilac Cottage has a lateral stack at the rear, and Meadow View and Rose Mount share an axial stack with back-to-back fireplaces. The layout suggests a possible late 18th to early 19th century remodelling of an earlier house, where Lilac Cottage may have been the hall, Meadow View the lower left end and passage, and Rose Mount a later addition when the house was converted.

The exterior presents a long, asymmetrical six-window range (two windows to each cottage). Most windows are late 19th-century 2 and 3-light casements with glazing bars, although some at Rose Mount and on the ground floor of Lilac Cottage are 20th-century replacements. There are three 20th-century glazed doors, each with a slate canopy, with Meadow View's canopy being underbuilt to form a porch. The rear elevation was only partially inspected.

The garden area includes front retaining walls, probably dating to the late 18th or 19th century, constructed from limestone and slate rubble. Each front doorway is accessed by a gateway containing a flight of steps. Internal inspection was limited to the ground floor of Meadow View and Lilac Cottage, where no early features were found. The first floor and roof spaces were not inspected.
