Description
This is a cottage dating from around 1835 to 1840. It is built of rendered stone rubble, with an asbestos slate hipped roof and rendered end stacks containing yellow clay pots. The original plan likely consisted of two rooms, with a central entrance. The right-hand room has a rear lateral stack for heating, while the left-hand room has an end stack. The cottage is situated at a right angle to the road, which is on its right. A late 20th-century single-storey extension is set on the left-hand end.
The east-facing front has a symmetrical facade with three windows, the central first-floor window being blind. Original 2-light casement windows with 8 panes per light are set in raised rendered surrounds. The central doorway has an original 6-pane door and a 20th-century glazed porch. Similar original casements are found on the right-hand end facing the road, one on each floor. A late 20th-century, flat-roofed extension is set back on the opposite left-hand end.
Attached to the right-hand end of the cottage, facing the road, is a garden boundary wall and gate, likely dating from the mid-19th century. The wall is constructed of local limestone rubble and acts as a retaining wall where the garden is at a higher level. A central gateway features a 19th-century wrought iron gate with bent stiles over the top rail. The interior was not inspected, but is believed to contain original joinery. This building is recognised for its group value.
